Immunizations

Each day, about 55 million students and 7 million staff attend the more than 130,000 public and private schools in the United States. People of all ages get sick with flu but school-aged children are a group with a high rate of flu illness.  The CDC recommends seasonal flu vaccination for everyone 6 months of age and older unless they have a specific contraindication to flu vaccine. The CDC also encourages schools to hold “vaccination clinics” at school for students, teachers, staff and parents to get the maximum yearly protection against a community outbreak.

The CDC reports that during past seasons, approximately 80% of flu-associated deaths in children have occurred in children who were not vaccinated.
